What are the causes of birth defects and disorders? What precautions should be taken while planning a baby to prevent birth defects and disorders? How to prevent birth defects and disorders during pregnancy?
To read the related article, click here. Read More...
Birth defects can be genetic, a result of lifestyle choices and behaviors, exposure to certain medicines and chemicals, or a combination of these factors. However, the exact cause of certain birth defects is often unknown.

    Genetics
The mother or father may pass on genetic abnormalities to a baby. These defects are established at conception and often cannot be prevented. A defect may be present throughout the family history of one or more parent. Genetic defects can also be carried in a family’s genetic code for generations undetected, and some defects occur only when two healthy parents unknowingly pass along abnormal genes.

    Nongenetic Causes
The cause of some birth defects can be difficult or impossible to identify. Certain behaviors, like smoking, drug, and alcohol use greatly increase the risk of defects. Other factors, such as exposure to environmental toxins, medications, or infections also increase risk. Women with pre-existing medical conditions, such as diabetes, are at higher risk of having a child with a birth defect.

Women who anticipate becoming pregnant should start taking folic acid supplements prior to conception and continue taking a physician-recommended dose as part of a prenatal vitamin throughout pregnancy. Folic acid can prevent serious defects of the spine and brain as well as some other types of birth defects.

Women should avoid alcohol, drugs, and tobacco during and after pregnancy. Some otherwise safe medications and vaccines can cause serious birth defects when taken by pregnant women. Talk to your doctor about any medications (including over-the-counter drugs and supplements) you may be taking, and which vaccines are necessary. Maintaining a healthy weight helps reduce risk of complications during pregnancy, and women with pre-existing conditions, such as diabetes, should take special care to manage their health.

Pregnant women should attend regular prenatal appointments with a healthcare professional. If your pregnancy is considered high-risk, additional screening may be able to identify defects so they can be treated as soon as possible.

    Genetic Counseling
A genetic counselor can advise couples with family histories of birth defects. A counselor can be helpful whether you are thinking about children or already expecting. This health professional can help determine the likelihood that your baby will be born with defects by evaluating family history and medical records. Genetic counselors may order tests to analyze the genes of the mother, father, and baby as well.

We lived in USA after getting married without able to conceive for 8 years. We had 3 IUI's and 2 IVF's failed over there. 2 years back we decided to try in India. The first try with IVF we had success. I had to stay back for few months because of few complications and lose my job but it was all worth it. I travelled back when I was 5 1/2 months and delivered the baby in USA.

Ours was all along unexplained infertility. So dont lose hope. One day will come when you can carry a health baby in your hands.

Good luck to all who are trying. Read More...
Sometimes it could be as simple as a nutritional deficiency, low cervical mucous, inaccurate timing of sexual intercourse, a pre-existing health issue, or it may be that you need to explore options for more in-depth testing. It is important to cover all the basics, including additional testing that may need to take place. We are going to cover key areas that need to be addressed, some ares may or may not apply to you, but some may have not been taken into consideration when you were given your diagnosis.

Approximately a quarter of all consultations we do involve couples who are given a diagnosis of unexplained infertility, yet they also have other health related conditions, may have poor dietary and lifestyle habits and many even have fertility issues that directly impact reproductive health. If you have been diagnosed with a fertility issue such as endometriosis, uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, ect., those issues may be what is causing your infertility struggles. It is very important to address those issues individually, prior to trying to conceive.

My son has a habit of bedwetting. I have tried many methods but still he wets the bed. How can I get rid of this habit? I am thinking of giving drugs for bedwetting. Anmy suggestions or personal experiences. Read More...
Physicians are careful to take a medical history and rule out medical causes, such as constipation or infection. Most bedwetting is what doctors call primary enuresis, meaning the child has always wet the bed. Doctors think it’s usually caused by a delay in the maturation of the mechanisms controlling the bladder.

But if bedwetting occurs after the child has been dry for a year or so, it’s termed secondary enuresis, and doctors must look more closely at the cause. Secondary enuresis could occur with psychological stress or trauma, and the child may need counseling or other treatment.

If no medical or psychological causes for bedwetting can be found, the family can move on to ways to help the child stop bedwetting.

What are the common feeding problems observed by parents? How can parents deal with feeding problems? How to make children eat their meals on their own?
To read the related article, click here. Read More...
Eat with your toddler as often as possible. If you and your partner both work full-time, it might be hard to arrange shared mealtimes, but try to make time if and when you can.

At shared mealtimes, eat the same foods as your toddler. Don't add any salt to your toddler's meal, though. Toddlers learn to eat new foods by watching and copying their parents and other children eating them.

    Stay positive

Make positive comments about the food you are eating. You're a role model for your toddler. If you make positive comments about foods, such as "These are yummy!", your toddler may be more willing to try them.

Praise your toddler when he eats well, because toddlers respond positively to praise. If you only give him attention when he is not eating, he may start to refuse food just to get some attention from you. Toddlers like attention, even if it is negative. If he doesn't eat well, take the uneaten food away without commenting. Accept that he has had enough.

Is it safe to eat papaya during pregnancy? Which foods can cause miscarriage during pregnancy? Is it safe to eat fish and seafood during pregnancy?

Eat a variety of foods to get all the nutrients you need. Recommended daily servings include 6-11 servings of breads and grains, two to four servings of fruit, four or more servings of vegetables, four servings of dairy products, and three servings of protein sources (meat, poultry, fish, eggs or nuts). Use fats and sweets sparingly.
Choose foods high in fiber that are enriched such as whole-grain breads, cereals, pasta, rice, fruits, and vegetables.
Make sure you are getting enough vitamins and minerals in your daily diet while pregnant. You should take a prenatal vitamin supplement to make sure you are consistently getting enough vitamins and minerals every day. Your doctor can recommend an over-the-counter brand or prescribe a prenatal vitamin for you.
Eat and drink at least four servings of dairy products and calcium-rich foods a day to help ensure that you are getting 1000-1300 mg of calcium in your daily diet during pregnancy.
Eat at least three servings of iron-rich foods per day to ensure you are getting 27 mg of iron daily.
Choose at least one good source of vitamin C every day, such as oranges, grapefruits, strawberries, honeydew, papaya, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussel sprouts, green peppers, tomatoes, and mustard greens. Pregnant women need 70 mg of vitamin C a day.
Choose at least one good source of folic acid every day, like dark green leafy vegetables, veal, and legumes (lima beans, black beans, black-eyed peas and chickpeas). Every pregnant woman needs at least 0.4 mg of folic acid per day to help prevent neural tube defects such as spina bifida.
Choose at least one source of vitamin A every other day. Sources of vitamin A include carrots, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, spinach, water squash, turnip greens, beet greens, apricots, and cantaloupe.

    Cheese

    Avoid:
mould-ripened soft cheeses, such as brie, camembert and others with a similar rind, including goats' cheese
soft blue-veined cheeses, such as Danish blue, gorgonzola and roquefort
Cheeses like this are made with mould and can contain listeria bacteria that cause listeriosis. Although an infection with listeria is rare, even a mild form of this infection in a pregnant woman can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth or severe illness in a newborn baby.

    Eggs

Avoid raw or undercooked eggs and any foods that contain them, such as homemade mayonnaise.
Make sure that eggs are thoroughly cooked until the whites and yolks are solid. This prevents the risk of salmonella food poisoning.
    Milk

Do not drink raw (unpasteurised) milk, including unpasteurised goats’ or sheep’s milk, or any food that is made of them, such as soft goats’ cheese.
If only raw or green-top milk is available, boil it first.
    Pâté

Avoid all types of pâté, including vegetable pâtés, as they can contain listeria.
    Meat

Do not eat raw or undercooked meat.
Cook all meat and poultry thoroughly so there’s no trace of pink or blood. Be particularly careful with sausages and minced meat.
The latest advice from the Food Standards Agency is that pregnant women should take care when eating cold cured meats such as salami, chorizo, pepperoni and Parma ham because these meats are not cooked but cured and fermented so they may contain toxoplasmosis-causing parasites.
It's best to check the instructions on the pack to see whether the product is ready-to-eat or needs cooking first.
For ready-to-eat meats, you can reduce any risk from parasites by freezing cured/fermented meats for four days at home before you eat them. Freezing kills most parasites and so makes the meat safer to eat.
    Liver

Avoid liver or liver products, such as liver pâté or liver sausage, as they may contain a lot of vitamin A. Too much vitamin A can harm your baby.
    Vitamin A

    Don’t take:
    high-dose multivitamin supplements
    fish liver oil supplements
    any supplements containing vitamin A
    Fish

There are some types of fish you should limit, such as tuna and oily fish, and some types of fish you should avoid completely, such as shark. Also, don’t eat raw shellfish, as it can cause food poisoning.
    Alcohol

You should avoid drinking alcohol if you're pregnant or trying to get pregnant. Too much exposure to alcohol can seriously affect your baby's development.
    Caffeine

You should limit caffeine during pregnancy – avoid having more than 200mg of caffeine a day. High levels of caffeine can cause babies to have a low birth weight. Too much caffeine can also cause a miscarriage. Caffeine is found naturally in some foods and is added to some soft drinks.

What do you do when you get a cold? How do you treat the flu? What home-remedies can help cure the cold and flu?
To read the related article, click here. Read More...
Maybe you've heard that vitamin C, echinacea, and zinc are good for a cold.

These do not cure a cold, but vitamin C and zinc may shorten the length of a cold. Research on echinacea has been mixed. Before trying these products, check with your doctor to make sure there are no interactions with other medicines you are taking.

Nasal strips can also help you breathe easier, since they can temporarily enlarge nasal passages.

Some traditional remedies might help relieve common cold discomfort, too.

Drink plenty of liquids, including chicken soup. It has been shown to relieve discomfort when you have a cold.
Relieve a sore throat by gargling with warm salt water, using throat sprays, and sucking on ice or lozenges.
Try a saltwater nasal rinse. Studies show that these can help with a stuffy or runny nose.
Use petroleum jelly on your nose if it’s irritated from constant blowing. Facial tissue with added lotions can help prevent and heal redness and soreness.
Use a humidifier to help break up phlegm.
When you have a cold, do what you can to make yourself as comfortable as possible and rest while your body fights the virus.

Which home remedies are effective on cough in kids? Is it safe to give over-the-counter medicines to kids for treating cough? What to do in case of persistent cough in kids? Read More...
No home remedies or cold medicines will make a cold go away faster. A cold usually runs its course in 7 to 10 days. At best, some medicines will relieve symptoms.

Make sure children stay hydrated, and give them what they’re accustomed to drinking. For babies, stick to breast milk or formula for those younger than 6 months. An oral electrolyte solution designed for infants, such as Pedialyte, also can be given. Don’t give straight water to babies younger than 6 months; their kidneys can’t process it correctly and an electrolyte imbalance may occur.

For children older than 12 months, try water, diluted juice, and milk.

Sometimes parents hear that they shouldn’t give milk because it promotes mucus building. That’s an old wives’ tale with no scientific evidence to back it up, Geraghty says. It’s especially important for babies to continue drinking breast milk or formula.

How is Spina Bifida caused? How to prevent Spina Bifida? Who is at the risk of getting affected with Spina Bifida?
To read the related article, click here. Read More...
The exact cause of spina bifida remains a mystery. No one knows what disrupts complete closure of the neural tube, causing a malformation to develop. Scientists suspect that the cause is multifactoral: genetic, nutritional, and environmental factors play a role. Research studies indicate that insufficient intake of folic acid -- a common B vitamin -- in the mother's diet is a key factor in causing spina bifida and other neural tube defects. Prenatal vitamins that are prescribed for the pregnant mother typically contain folic acid as well as other vitamins.

There are many possible causes of heavy menstrual bleeding. They include:

Hormonal imbalance, particularly in estrogen and progesterone; this is most common in adolescents who recently began their periods and women who are getting close to menopause. Hormonal imbalance may also occur if there is a problem in the function of the ovaries.
Fibroids or noncancerous tumors of the uterus; fibroids typically occur during childbearing years.
Miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy -- the implantation of a fertilized egg outside the uterus, such as in the fallopian tube
    Use of blood thinners
Problems with a non-hormonal intrauterine device (IUD) used for birth control
Adenomyosis, a condition in which the glands from the lining of the uterus become imbedded in the muscular wall of the uterus; this is most likely to occur in middle-aged women who have had several children.
Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), an infection of the uterus, fallopian tubes, and other organs of the reproductive system
Uterine, ovarian, and cervical cancer; these are rare but possible causes of heavy menstrual bleeding.
Other medical conditions that can prevent normal blood clotting, including liver, kidney, or thyroid disease, and bleeding or platelet disorders
